This is Gilding Tip — a gilder's tip for lifting and laying gold leaf. The tip carries a static charge that picks the leaf off the cushion and releases it onto the tacky size — the fundamental gilder's move.
Charge the tip by drawing it across your hair or cheek, slide it under the cut leaf, and lay the leaf down in one smooth motion. Keep the tip clean and dry; oil or moisture kills the static.
Use it for oil gilding with slow or quick size on picture frames, mirrors, and furniture. A good tip, kept clean, will serve for years of daily gilding.
Never store a brush resting on its point. Hang or lay flat, keep out of direct heat, and never leave soaking — soaking swells the ferrule and ruins the set of the hair.
