About this design

“Hydegrade Trade Mark Taffeta Petticoats” vintage trade sign, digitized by hand by Gary Godby. Pointing-hand motif with “Insist Upon the Label” badge and “Silks Only Rival” medallion.

This design comes from Gary’s “Lost Frank Atkinson Drawings Series,” worked up from an unpublished Atkinson pencil sketch with Atkinson’s own handwritten color notes. Gary’s finished full-color version was displayed at the 1991 Letterhead meet in Bloomington, Illinois.

About the artist

Gary Godby has worked in the sign trade for over 50 years, beginning in 1974. Part of the Letterheads movement since the 1985 Naples, Florida meet, he spent 16 years in the Walt Disney Company Sign and Pictorial Department and continues as a signage design consultant for Walt Disney Imagineering. From Godby Studios in Blairsville, Georgia, his work spans 23k water and oil gilding, reverse glass painting, glue chipping, traditional hand-lettering, dimensional signage, and faux and aged finishes.
