The minimum kit for oil gilding — a brush, the size, and the leaf, nothing extra. If you want to learn how to gold leaf, this is where to start: a Handover goose quill for laying the size, 8 ounces of Dux oil-based quick size, and a full book of genuine 23kt gold leaf from Manetti, 25 hammered-thin square sheets, 3.25 inches on a side, each sheet on tissue in the book. Brush the size on, wait for tack, lay the leaf, and burnish it down — the same oil gilding method used on glass, metal, and wood for generations. No filler, no varnish you may not need, no tools you will not use yet. When you are ready for more, the Starter kit adds the gilder's tip and dusting mop, and the higher tiers add more leaf, larger size, and the full set of gilding tools.
What's in the kit
- Quill, Ltd. Series 2101 Sable Mix Metal Ferrule, Goose Size #6, A.S. Handover — low-priced goose size 6 quill, for laying size and working the leaf.
- Dux Gold Leaf Quick Size, Oil Based, 1/2 Pint — 8 oz — oil size: brush on, wait for tack, lay the leaf.
- Manetti 23kt Large-Area-Double Gold Leaf Surface Book — genuine 23kt gold leaf, 25 hammered-thin square sheets, 3.25" × 3.25", one square on tissue in an open book.
Customer supplies their own: cotton and varnish are not in the Basic Oil kit.
When you don't need clearcoat: work out of hand's reach — 8 feet or higher — does not need a clearcoat. Gold lasts longest untouched. Clearcoat is necessary when the work can be touched, or on moving vehicles — where handling, vibration, and weather wear the leaf.
