High Grade Sheet Gelatin - The Goldfather - The Goldfather This is High Grade Sheet Gelatin — gelatin for gilding, stocked by Letterhead Sign Supply for working gilders and sign painters. Right gelatin under the leaf is what makes gold stay put and shine; this is the shelf the trade buys from. Sheet gelatin is the traditional gilder's glue for water gilding — soak, warm gently, and brush over gesso as the tack coat that grabs the leaf. Work warm and don't boil it; overheated gelatin loses its grab. Use it for frame, mirror, and furniture gilding on liturgical ware, icons, and fine art. This is the old-world water-gilding method — gesso, clay, gelatin size, leaf, then burnish. Store sealed and at room temperature; keep water-based sizes from freezing. Stir or shake gently before use and strain out any skin that forms on top. Details
