Silver Leaf Kit, Basic Oil

The minimum kit for oil gilding in silver — a brush, the size, and the leaf, nothing extra. Brush the size on, wait for tack, lay the leaf, and burnish it down — the same oil gilding method used on glass, metal, and wood for generations. No filler, no varnish you may not need, no tools you will not use yet.

What's in the kit

• Quill, Ltd. Series 2101 Sable Mix Metal Ferrule, Goose Size #6, A.S. Handover — low-priced goose size 6 quill, for laying size and working the leaf.
• Dux Gold Leaf Quick Size, Oil Based, 1/2 Pint — 8 oz — oil size: brush on, wait for tack, lay the leaf.
• Silver Leaf .999 Pure Loose book, 25 sheets — W&B Gold Leaf, genuine .999 pure silver leaf, 25 sheets.

Customer supplies their own: cotton and varnish are not in the Basic Oil kit.

When you don't need clearcoat: work out of hand's reach — 8 feet or higher — does not need a clearcoat. Silver, like gold, lasts longest untouched. Clearcoat is necessary when the work can be touched, or on moving vehicles — where handling, vibration, and weather wear the leaf. Note: silver tarnishes over time where gold does not, so clearcoat is more often wanted on silver work within reach.
