Sinopia Casein Gesso (4oz) - W&B Gold Leaf
This is Sinopia Casein Gesso (4oz) — gesso for gilding, stocked by Letterhead Sign Supply for working gilders and sign painters. Right gesso under the leaf is what makes gold stay put and shine; this is the shelf the trade buys from.
Size is the adhesive that grabs the gold — brush it on, wait for the right tack, and lay your leaf. Too wet and the leaf sinks; too dry and it won't catch. Test tack with your knuckle: it should pull, not slide.
Every gilding method — oil, water, or glass — starts with the size going down right. Use it on wood, metal, glass, plaster, and canvas; brush on, wait for tack, and lay the leaf.
Store sealed and at room temperature; keep water-based sizes from freezing. Stir or shake gently before use and strain out any skin that forms on top.
