Sign Smalts

Sign smalts are the workhorse colors of the trade — the medium-grain (1–2.4mm) crushed glass aggregate sign painters reach for when a panel needs a durable, light-catching background. These are the classic sign-shop shades: deep reds, cobalt blues, rich greens, and warm ambers that read clearly from across the street and hold their color for decades outdoors.

Every color in this section is genuine glass smalt, with the pigment fused into the glass during manufacture for built-in ultraviolet protection. Press it into enamel mixed with smalt cream, build it up in light passes, and let it cure 24 to 48 hours. One pound covers roughly one to one-and-a-half square feet.
