Smalts

Smalt is crushed, pigmented glass crushed into a coarse aggregate and pressed into wet paint to create a long-lasting, light-catching textured background on hand-painted signs. Also called smaltz, smalting, or osmalto, the technique was at its height from about 1865 to 1935, when building exteriors were coated with smalt from the second floor up to stretch a paint job another twenty years. The trade eventually moved it onto sign panels, where it became the standard background finish for high-end work — you can still see original smalted signs in places like Disneyland, resort casinos, and historic downtowns.

Unlike the old sand-smalt method, which stained sand with gasoline and japan color only to watch the pigment fade, true glass smalt locks the color inside the glass itself during manufacture. That trapped pigment gives glass smalt real ultraviolet protection, so the color holds outdoors. Transparent smalts behave like cut gemstones — light passes through each grain and throws back a deep, sparkling glow that paint alone cannot produce.

Sign painters press smalt into a bed of enamel mixed with smalt cream, then build it up in light passes until the surface is fully covered. One pound of smalt typically covers one to one-and-a-half square feet depending on how heavily it is applied. Use it as an accent, a sparkling border, or a full edge-to-edge background behind raised letters — a smalted finish makes any sign stand out.
