Top-grade solid white mother of pearl stringed-instrument nut, cut from the largest raw shells. Shell nuts are bright-sounding and transfer string energy with a crispness plastic cannot match. May show natural figure or select color.

File the nut to fit the slot, shape the top, cut string slots with nut files, and polish. Work slowly — shell is hard but brittle; support the piece while filing.
