About this book

Daniel T. Ames was a master penman of America's Spencerian age — and his 1882 Hand Book of Artistic Penmanship teaches the ornamental side of the art: the flourished capitals, offhand flourishes, and elaborate script that turned penmanship into a performance. This is the penmanship of diplomas, certificates, resolutions, and memorials — writing meant to be framed, not filed.

The book trains the hand in the two skills every ornamental penman needed: the shaded script hand with its precise light-and-shade strokes, and free flourishing — the sweeping birds, scrolls, and cartouche forms drawn without lifting the pen, guided by rhythm and muscle memory. Ames breaks the flourishes down so the student can build them stroke by stroke, from simple curves to the full ceremonial compositions.

In 1882 a fine penman could make his living on presentation work alone, and Ames's manual preserves the professional method at its height — the drills, the exemplars, and the standards of the engrosser's art. For the modern calligrapher it is a direct line to the 19th-century American ornamental tradition at its most disciplined.

For calligraphers, engrossers, pen-and-ink artists, students of Spencerian and ornamental penmanship, and collectors of 19th-century writing manuals. The flourished hand, taught by a master of the golden age.

Details: 6×9" hardcover (case laminate), black and white interior, cream paper.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a print-on-demand reprint of a scanned historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1882 printing, and the print quality of your book reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1882 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1882 book with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
