About this book
Frank H. Atkinson's Sign Painting Up to Now (1909) is one of the foundation stones of the American sign-painting literature — the book that taught a generation of painters the trade. 'Up to now' was Atkinson's promise: everything the sign painter needed to know, brought current to 1909. The book delivers it: the working alphabets — Roman, Egyptian, Gothic, and fancy hands — drawn for the brush; layout and spacing; shaded and ornamented letters; gold-leaf work on glass and wood; and the shop practice of paints, brushes, and surfaces.
Atkinson wrote as a master practitioner, and the book has the authority of the shop behind every page. The plates are the heart of it — page after page of alphabets and examples in the confident Edwardian commercial style, the letterforms that covered the storefronts, walls, and windows of early-1900s America. For the student, the progression is complete: from single strokes to finished signs.
More than a century later, Atkinson's 1909 manual remains one of the most-cited books in the sign-painting revival, because the fundamentals haven't changed: proportion, spacing, rhythm, and the brush handling that makes a letter live. For working sign painters it is still a bench reference; for letterers and collectors, it is one of the essential books of the trade.
The classic Atkinson sign-painting manual. For sign painters, letterers, and everyone building a trade library.
Details: 6×9" hardcover (case laminate), black and white interior, cream paper.
⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality
This is a print-on-demand reprint of a scanned historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1909 printing, and the print quality of your book reflects the condition of that original scan.
What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1909 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.
We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1909 book with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
Printed on demand by IngramSpark. One copy at a time — no inventory, no waste.
