About this book

Electric Locomotives: Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1896. The Baldwin catalog of electric locomotives — back in print.

In 1896 the electric locomotive was the future, and Baldwin — the greatest locomotive builder in America — was selling it. This illustrated catalog presents Baldwin's electric line with the engravings, specifications, and salesmanship of the era: a masterpiece of 19th-century industrial catalog art and antique advertising at its most confident.

For railroadiana collectors and students of vintage industrial design, it is a prime specimen — the heavy engraved illustrations of an industry at its peak, documenting the moment when steam was king and electricity was the challenger. The 138 pages carry the visual language of the machine age: precise, proud, and built to persuade.

A handsome piece of industrial history, reproduced complete.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a digital edition scanned from a historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1896 printing, and the quality of your download reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1896 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1896 manual with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
