About this book

George J. Becker's Ornamental Penmanship (1854) is one of the earliest American books devoted to the flourished hand — published in the decade before the Civil War, in the generation before Spencerian penmanship became the national standard. It preserves the ornamental writing of the 1850s: shaded script, flourished capitals, and the free, sweeping offhand work that made a penman famous in his town.

The mid-19th century was the heroic age of the traveling writing master, and books like Becker's were how the art spread — exemplar plates for the student to copy, stroke by stroke, until the hand learned the rhythm of the shaded line and the unhesitating curve of the flourish. Every plate is a lesson in the muscular, confident writing of the pre-Spencerian era.

For the modern student of penmanship history this is a rare survival: a look at the American ornamental hand as it was actually taught in 1854, before the systems hardened into the copybook styles everyone knows. For the practicing calligrapher it is fresh source material — flourishes and capitals from outside the familiar Spencerian canon.

For calligraphers, penmanship historians, collectors of antebellum Americana, and students of ornamental writing. Among the earliest American ornamental penmanship books — a genuine 1854 survival.

Details: 6×9" hardcover (case laminate), black and white interior, cream paper.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a print-on-demand reprint of a scanned historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1854 printing, and the print quality of your book reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1854 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1854 book with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
