About this book

The Ways of the Circus: Being the Memories and Adventures of George Conklin, Tamer of Lions, 1921. A lion tamer's life story — back in print.

George Conklin faced lions for a living in the golden age of the American circus, and this 1921 memoir is his story: the adventures, the close calls, the menagerie world behind the big top. It is the circus as the performers lived it — not the poster's romance but the sawdust reality, told by a man who earned every scar.

Circus historians and big-top nostalgists will find 346 pages of first-hand material you cannot get anywhere else: the training, the travel, the menagerie, and the strange brotherhood of the circus lot. A vivid, plain-spoken memoir from a vanished profession.

The lion tamer's own story, reproduced complete.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a digital edition scanned from a historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1921 printing, and the quality of your download reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1921 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1921 manual with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
