About this book
Pilkington Brothers were the great name in British glass — and this 1904 Designs for Embossed Glass is their pattern book: the embossed and figured glass designs the firm offered to architects, glaziers, decorators, and the sign trade. Embossed glass gave windows, doors, partitions, and sign backgrounds a texture and pattern that paint alone could never achieve.
The designs show the full Edwardian vocabulary of figured glass — geometric patterns, floral and foliate treatments, borders and all-over figures — the patterns that filled the transoms, office doors, and storefronts of the era. For the restoration glazier or the sign artist working on period buildings, it is the authentic source: these are the actual patterns, from the actual maker. Study them and you learn the period vocabulary — which patterns belonged on a pub door, which on a bank partition, which on a shop transom — the kind of placement knowledge that makes restoration work convincing.
As a document of the 1904 glass industry it is also a beautiful browse — the moment when British decorative glass was at its confident best, and every pattern was drawn to be manufactured and sold.
For restoration glaziers, architects working on period buildings, sign artists, collectors of Pilkington and trade catalogs, and students of decorative glass. The 1904 pattern book of Britain's great glassmaker.
Details: 6×9" paperback, black and white interior, cream paper.
⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality
This is a print-on-demand reprint of a scanned historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1904 printing, and the print quality of your book reflects the condition of that original scan.
What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1904 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.
We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1904 book with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
Printed on demand by IngramSpark. One copy at a time — no inventory, no waste.
