About this book
This 1899 International Correspondence Schools Elements of Lettering and Sign Painting is the earlier generation of the ICS sign course — the correspondence lessons that taught the trade by mail before the turn of the century. For the student who could not serve an apprenticeship, these were the lessons: brush alphabets, letter formation, spacing, and the layout of plain, readable signs.
The course teaches the fundamentals in the ICS manner — clear, sequential, built for distance learning: the Roman, block, and script hands of the working sign writer, shading and ornament, and the panel layouts that made a sign look professional. It is the 1899 method, preserved lesson by lesson. The lessons assume no prior training — only a brush, some paint, and the willingness to practice — which is exactly why the correspondence method worked for so many. Held against the later ICS textbooks, it shows the course in its earlier, leaner form: the fundamentals before the curriculum grew.
For the modern reader it is both a learnable course and a historical document — the actual instruction that put thousands of 19th-century men into the sign trade, at the moment when correspondence schools were opening the crafts to anyone with the determination to study.
For self-taught sign painters, lettering students, instructors seeking period teaching material, and collectors of trade-school literature. The 1899 correspondence course in sign painting.
Details: 6×9" hardcover (case laminate), black and white interior, cream paper.
⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality
This is a print-on-demand reprint of a scanned historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1899 printing, and the print quality of your book reflects the condition of that original scan.
What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1899 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.
We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1899 book with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
Printed on demand by IngramSpark. One copy at a time — no inventory, no waste.
