About this book

Signs and Sign Letters by George Steere, c. 1900. A sign maker's catalog of signs and dimensional letters — back in print.

George Steere sold what sign painters couldn't paint fast enough: ready-made signs and sign letters for the storefront trade. This catalog — circa 1900, 66 pages — shows the manufactured side of the sign business at the turn of the century: the letters, the sign types, and the prices, illustrated for the ordering trade.

For buyers of antique sign catalogs, it is the companion piece to the painter's manuals — the other half of the industry, the factory behind the storefront. The letter styles on display are pure 1900 commercial vernacular: useful as design reference for dimensional-letter work today, and irresistible as ephemera.

A scarce trade catalog, reproduced complete for today's sign folk.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a digital edition scanned from a historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1900 printing, and the quality of your download reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1900 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1900 manual with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
