About this book

Interior Painting: Stencil Cutting, Pounces, Painting Woodwork by F. Maire, 1910. The stencil cutter's manual — back in print.

Stencil work was the interior painter's shortcut to ornament — and Maire's 1910 book teaches the whole of it: cutting stencils, making pounces, preparing and painting woodwork, and the interior painting practice of the day. 168 pages of the craft as it was taught to working painters, with the hand skills spelled out.

For the decorative painter and the sign painter who cuts his own masks and patterns, this is the period textbook — the hand skills behind the ornament, from a time when every pattern was cut by hand and every pounce was pricked by the painter himself. Practical, illustrated, and directly usable in the modern shop.

The stencil cutter's trade manual, reproduced complete.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a digital edition scanned from a historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1910 printing, and the quality of your download reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1910 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1910 manual with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
