About this book

Regulations for the Proper Construction, Maintenance and Operation of Standard Painted Bulletin Advertising Plants, 1917. The outdoor advertising industry's own rulebook — back in print.

In 1917 the painted bulletin — the big hand-painted billboard — was the giant of outdoor advertising, and the Outdoor Advertising Association of America wrote the standards: how bulletins were built, how they were maintained, how the plants operated. This 58-page booklet is the industry regulating itself at the height of the painted-bulletin era.

For the outdoor advertising historian and the sign painter, it is a remarkable document — the engineering and business standards behind the great painted walls of the 1910s, the structures that carried the brushwork of the billboard painters. Short, official, and unlike anything else on the shelf.

The billboard industry's own manual, reproduced complete.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a digital edition scanned from a historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1917 printing, and the quality of your download reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1917 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1917 manual with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
