About this book

Isaac H. Walker's 1884 Process of Gilding and Bronzing Picture Frames is the frame gilder's book — a specialist's manual for the trade that put gold around America's pictures. Frame gilding was its own craft within gilding: the built-up composition ornament, the gesso grounds, water gilding for the burnished highlights and oil gilding for the matte passages, the toning and antiquing that made a new frame look right beside an old painting. Walker covers the process end to end, from the bare wood and compo to the finished frame.

The bronzing half of the title matters too. Bronze powders gave the frame shops a fast, economical alternative to leaf — and knowing when to bronze and when to leaf, and how to make bronze work look like gold, was professional knowledge worth paying for. Walker's 1884 methods are the methods behind the great mass of Victorian and Edwardian frames still hanging in homes and galleries.

For frame restorers, this is the period operating manual: the grounds, sizes, and finishing steps of the original work, described by a man of the trade. For gilders, it is a focused course in water gilding technique applied to the most demanding of all gilding surfaces — the carved and molded frame.

A vintage gilding manual for the frame trade, from the era that gilded a nation's pictures. For gilders, frame restorers, and collectors of craft manuals.

Details: 6×9" paperback, black and white interior, cream paper.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality

This is a print-on-demand reprint of a scanned historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1884 printing, and the print quality of your book reflects the condition of that original scan.

What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1884 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.

We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1884 book with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
