About this book
Dated 1841, Orson Campbell's Treatise on Carriage Sign and Ornamental Painting is one of the earliest sign-painting books in the English language — a pioneering manual from the days when the sign painter's finest canvas was the carriage panel. This is the trade at its root: painting and varnishing carriages, striping and ornamenting panels, lettering names and devices on coach doors, and the ornamental painting — scrolls, flourishes, and pictorial work — that made a carriage a rolling advertisement for its maker's skill.
The carriage trade was the high craft of 19th-century painting. A carriage panel demanded the painter's best: a ground like glass, striping laid with a sword striper in a single pass, lettering and ornament that would survive weather and road dust. Campbell's treatise teaches it as the master taught the apprentice — the materials, the grounds, the striping technique, and the ornamental vocabulary of the coach painter's art.
For pinstripers, this is the wellspring. The striping and scroll work of the 1841 carriage shops is the direct ancestor of the pinstriping tradition — every line laid freehand, every flourish a test of nerve. For sign painters and restorers of horse-drawn vehicles, Campbell's is the period authority on how the work was originally done.
The pioneering American manual of the ornamental painter's trade. For pinstripers, sign painters, carriage restorers, and collectors of the earliest trade books.

⚠️ Please read before ordering — about print quality
This is a print-on-demand reprint of a scanned historical document. The pages were scanned from an original 1841 printing, and the print quality of your book reflects the condition of that original scan.
What that means in plain terms: you may see faded text, uneven inking, age spots, show-through from the back of pages, and other imperfections that were in the 1841 original or introduced by the scanning process. These are preserved as-is — they are not printing defects, and they are not something we can fix.
We are not responsible for the condition of the original source material. If you want a pristine modern typeset book, this isn't it. If you want the actual 1841 book with all its character intact, you're in the right place.
Printed on demand by IngramSpark. One copy at a time — no inventory, no waste.
